Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. When she was a infant, Ford struggled with anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by word associations. Ford's interest in acting began in her early years. She was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford then applied to be a student at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her selection in the year 1996.
